SEWER SERVICES

Sewer problems rarely announce themselves clearly. Howze Plumbing starts every job with a camera inspection — so the right service gets matched to the actual problem, not the most common assumption.

Removes buildup, grease, and debris from the line before it causes a backup. Recommended for recurring slowdowns or as preventive maintenance.

High-pressure water at up to 4,000 PSI scours the full pipe wall — roots, scale, grease, and sludge. The permanent fix when snaking stops working.

Cracks, root intrusion, collapsed sections, and failing joints. Howze Plumbing identifies the damaged section and repairs it — with trenchless options available.

When the line is beyond repair — severely collapsed, fully root-infiltrated, or at end of life — full replacement is the right call. Howze Plumbing handles it start to finish.

The main sewer line runs from the foundation to the street — and when it fails, the whole house feels it. Howze Plumbing diagnoses and repairs the full lateral line using camera inspection to pinpoint the problem before any ground is broken. Trenchless lining available for qualifying lines.

WARNING SIGNS

Sewer problems are underground and out of sight — which means most homeowners don’t notice until the situation is serious. These are the signs Howze Plumbing sees most often before a full backup or failure.

Sewage backing up into the home
Sewage in a tub, toilet, or floor drain is an active sewer failure. Don’t wait.

Recurring slow drains throughout the house
When multiple fixtures drain slowly at the same time, the problem is in the main sewer line — not individual drains.

Persistent sewer odor indoors or in the yard
Sewer gas rising through drains or surfacing in the yard often indicates a cracked or compromised line.

Unusually green or wet patches in the yard
A leaking sewer line fertilizes the grass above it. Soggy ground with no rain is a reliable sign of underground leakage.

Gurgling sounds from toilets or drains
Air trapped by a partial blockage causes gurgling. If it happens in multiple fixtures, the main line is involved.

Older home with original clay or cast iron pipes
DFW homes built before 1980 often have original sewer lines that are decades past their expected service life.

Sewage backup or sewer odor indoors needs immediate attention. These aren’t slow-developing problems — they’re health hazards. Call Howze Plumbing at 817-305-8600.

THE PROCESS

1. Locate the cleanout and access the main line: Howze Plumbing identifies the sewer cleanout — typically near the foundation or at the property line — and accesses the main line. If no cleanout exists or it’s inaccessible, one is installed before work proceeds.

2. Camera inspection of the full sewer line: A camera is run the length of the main sewer line from the cleanout to the municipal connection. The footage shows the interior condition of the pipe in real time — buildup, root intrusion, joint separation, cracks, or collapsed sections — and pinpoints exactly where problems are located.

3. Diagnosis: identify the failure type: Not all sewer problems are the same, and the fix depends on what the camera reveals. Heavy buildup and grease calls for hydro jetting. Isolated root intrusion or a cracked joint may only need a spot repair. A pipe that’s collapsed or fully infiltrated along its length is a replacement conversation. Howze Plumbing explains what was found and why it points to a specific service — with footage to back it up.

4. The work — matched to the actual problem: Cleaning, hydro jetting, trenchless pipe lining, targeted excavation and repair, or full line replacement — whatever the camera identified is what gets done. Homeowners aren’t sold a replacement when a repair will hold, or a cleaning when the pipe is structurally failing.

5. Post-service camera pass: After the work is complete, the camera goes back in. Homeowners see the before and after. A clear line is confirmed on camera — not just assumed.

6. Condition report and next steps: Howze Plumbing walks the homeowner through the current state of the line, what was done, and what to watch for. If other sections of the line showed early wear, that’s noted — so homeowners can plan ahead rather than face another emergency call.

WHY DFW IS DIFFERENT

Most sewer problems have the same underlying causes everywhere. In DFW, several regional factors stack on top of each other — making sewer line failure more common here than in most parts of the country.

Blackland Prairie Clay Soil
North Texas sits on some of the most expansive clay soil in the country. It shrinks heavily during drought and swells when rain returns — a constant cycle that shifts, cracks, and separates underground sewer pipe joints in ways more stable soil regions rarely experience.

Drought-Flood Weather Cycles
DFW regularly swings between prolonged dry periods and heavy rain events. Each cycle forces the soil to expand and contract again, placing repeated stress on underground sewer lines year after year.

Live Oaks, Cedar Elms, & Pecan Trees
These trees are common throughout DFW neighborhoods and are known for aggressive root systems that seek out moisture underground. Sewer lines often become a target, making root intrusion one of the most common sewer problems found during inspections.

Aging 1970s–90s Infrastructure
Many homes throughout Keller, North Richland Hills, Hurst, Euless, and nearby DFW communities were built during major residential growth between the late 1970s and early 1990s. Much of that original clay and cast iron sewer infrastructure is now reaching the age where cracking, corrosion, shifting, and recurring sewer problems become far more common.

None of these factors is unusual on its own. What makes DFW different is that all four show up together — expansive soil, extreme weather swings, aggressive tree species, and aging pipe materials — in the same neighborhoods, on the same properties. Howze Plumbing has diagnosed sewer lines across this region long enough to know exactly what to look for.

COMMON QUESTIONS

How do I know if I have a sewer line problem or just a clogged drain?
A single clogged sink or shower is usually isolated to that fixture. Sewer line problems typically affect multiple drains at once. Homeowners across DFW often notice toilets bubbling, tubs backing up when the washing machine runs, recurring drain issues, sewage odors, or water backing up at the lowest drains in the home. Older homes throughout North Texas are especially vulnerable due to aging clay pipes and tree root intrusion.

What causes sewer line damage in the DFW area?
North Texas soil movement is one of the biggest causes. Expansive clay soil throughout Fort Worth, and surrounding areas shifts during drought and heavy rain cycles, which can place stress on underground sewer pipes. Tree roots, aging cast iron or clay lines, corrosion, grease buildup, and ground settling also commonly contribute to sewer line failures across DFW.

Do tree roots commonly affect sewer lines in Keller?
Yes. Mature trees are common throughout established Keller neighborhoods and many surrounding DFW communities. Roots naturally seek moisture and can enter small cracks or pipe joints underground. Once inside, they continue growing and eventually restrict flow or damage the pipe. Root intrusion is one of the most common sewer line problems Howze Plumbing encounters in older North Texas homes.

Can you inspect sewer lines without digging up the yard?
Yes. Howze Plumbing uses sewer camera inspections to look directly inside the line and identify the exact location and cause of the issue. In many cases, this allows problems to be diagnosed without unnecessary excavation. Camera inspections are especially useful for identifying roots, cracks, collapsed sections, offsets, and heavy buildup.

When does a sewer line need repair instead of replacement?
If the damage is isolated to a smaller section of pipe, repair is often possible. Minor cracks, localized root intrusion, separated joints, or limited corrosion can sometimes be repaired without replacing the entire line. If the pipe has widespread deterioration, repeated failures, or collapsed sections, replacement may be the more reliable long-term solution.

How much does sewer line repair cost in the DFW area?
The cost depends on the severity of the problem, pipe depth, accessibility, repair method, and how much of the line is affected. Smaller repairs may cost a few hundred dollars, while larger sewer line replacements can run several thousand. Howze Plumbing provides upfront pricing after inspecting the line so homeowners know exactly what to expect before work begins.

Do you offer trenchless sewer line repair or replacement?
Howze Plumbing evaluates whether trenchless solutions are appropriate based on the condition of the existing pipe, access points, and the type of damage present. Some sewer issues can be addressed with less invasive repair methods, while others require traditional excavation to properly correct the problem.

How long does sewer line repair usually take?
Many sewer repairs can be completed within a day, while larger replacements may take longer depending on the extent of the damage and whether excavation is required. North Texas weather, soil conditions, and city permitting can also affect timelines in some situations.

What are signs my sewer line may be collapsing?
Frequent backups, sewage odors outside, soggy patches in the yard, slow drains throughout the house, foundation-adjacent moisture, or recurring plumbing issues despite drain cleaning can all indicate serious sewer line deterioration. Older clay and cast iron pipes throughout DFW are more prone to collapse as they age.

Can hydro jetting fix sewer line problems?
Hydro jetting is highly effective for clearing grease, sludge, roots, and heavy buildup inside sewer lines, but it does not repair broken pipes. If the line has cracks, separations, or structural damage, additional repair work may still be needed after cleaning.

Do older homes in DFW have higher sewer line risks?
Yes. Many older homes throughout Fort Worth, Arlington, and surrounding DFW communities still have aging clay or cast iron sewer pipes. Over time, these materials become more vulnerable to corrosion, shifting, root intrusion, and structural failure — especially with North Texas soil movement and seasonal weather extremes.

Do you provide emergency sewer service in Keller and all across DFW?
Yes. Howze Plumbing provides sewer line diagnostics and emergency plumbing service for homeowners throughout Keller and all DFW communities. Sewer backups and major drain issues can quickly become sanitation problems, so fast diagnosis and repair are important.
